There’s still plenty of call for that indie sound, and it’s been wonderful to see Wolf Alice win the Mercury Prize this year followed by Sam Fender winning the Brits Critic’s Choice Award. He’s a young man from North Shields who matches a stirring guitar and drum sound with serious lyrics that show that he’s a social observer, rather than a bumper and grinder. My favourite line from this song is, “Dying for some R.E.M…” For me it works as a yearning for the healing force of Michael Stipe’s voice, rather than the need for some shut eye, and a celebration of how music keeps you grounded when surrounded by a challenging world.
Sam has gigged extensively this year to earn his success and you can expect to see a lot of him in 2019.
