Singles of 2017: 1) Jamiroquai – Automaton

Sometimes you don’t know you’ve missed something until it’s back. So when Automaton landed, with a perfect futuristic blend of pop, funk, disco and rap, all of a sudden it was a reminder of what a vision Jay Kay was in his pomp and how irresistible their sound was. The song ponders the dehumanising effects of the rise of technology, the man who fell to Earth looking back to the stars. In the video he gives us a few of his signature moves with a hat that seems to have a mind of it’s own and there’s a Planet Of The Apes moment when he finds a relic of his old headgear and lifts it to the sky. The song fizzes and pings it’s way to the top of my tree in 2017.
